“Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,
but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
You can look forward to a cold winter with more wintery precipitation than usual in North Carolina this year — at least if you believe the good folks from the Farmers’ Almanac. The centuries-old forecaster is predicting the Southeast to receive a “brisk and wet” winter, with above normal precipitation in the eastern third of the U.S. during the winter months. My daughter Hannah will be happy to hear that. She is thrilled whenever snow is in the forecast! According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the coldest outbreak of the season should arrive during the final week of January and last through the beginning of February. Make plans to keep warm!
The Farmer’s Almanac has a remarkably accurate record of predictions. It has nearly an 80% accuracy track record. These scientists use a “secret” mathematical and astronomical formula based on factors such as sunspot activity and the tidal action of the moon to formulate its winter predictions. Will it be right this year? We will have to wait and see!
The Bible provides a spiritual weather forecast in Matthew 24. The forecast calls for an “increase in wickedness” and predicts that “the love of most will grow cold.” There isn’t a secret formula that calculates this, but it is a promise from the all-knowing Creator. And, his publication (The Bible) has a 100% accuracy track record. You can count on this forecast to be true.
You don’t need to look very hard to realize this forecast is spot-on accurate. Open up your favorite news app and peruse the headlines. Wickedness is growing – in our world, in our nation, and in our local community. We see love for fellow human beings growing cold in the people around us. And, if we are honest, we see it growing cold in ourselves at times too. We can all confess that we often are not as loving, caring, kind, compassionate or generous as we could be. Each of us can admit to willfully passing up opportunities to show love to others. We all get caught in a spiritual chill at times.
Warm up with God’s Word when you feel the spiritual chill. Read it. Hear it. Talk about it. In his Word, God invites you to receive the warm, loving embrace of your Savior, Jesus. Wrap yourself in his love like a warm blanket. Share that warmth with others who are shivering in the spiritual cold. God’s loving promises are the only way to keep warm during this spiritual cooling trend. God’s love for you in Christ never grows cold.
Stand firm during the spiritually cold and loveless day ahead, because there is another forecast you can count on – the promise of your Savior’s glorious return when he will melt away all unbelief and take you home to heaven to rest in the warmth of his love for eternity. Endure the cold, knowing that warmer days are ahead. Keep warm with God’s Word!
