You Are In Good Hands

“And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age. — Matthew 28:20

The young boy was afraid to be dropped off at school each morning. He was anxious about the unknowns and worried about what might happen during the school day. But each day his mother walked him to his classroom, gave him a big hug, and assured him, “Don’t worry son, you are in good hands.” This calm assurance from his mom put his mind at ease each day.

Fast forward 40 years to see this same mother struggling with dementia. It isn’t safe for her to live on her own anymore. The mother and her son reluctantly agree that moving to an assisted living center is best for her. After moving in and visiting for a while, her son gets up from his chair to leave for the evening. But he can see the anxiety on his mom’s face. He goes to her bedside, gives her a big hug and assures her, “Don’t worry mom, you are in good hands.”  Her eyes fill with tears as she remembers the many times she provided the same comforting assurance to her son so many years ago.

After Jesus rose from the dead, he showed himself to many of his disciples on multiple occasions in the following forty days. During that time, and shortly before his ascension, he charged his disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). He sensed their worry and fear regarding this daunting assignment. So he followed up with the promise, “And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Jesus’s promise was a reassuring hug that eased his disciples’ fears and calmed their troubled hearts. They could rest assured that they were in good hands as they went about their mission – they were in Jesus’ hands.

What type of trouble or uncertainty you are facing in your life?  What causes you anxiety and makes your heart race when you think on it?  We all have such issues in our lives. Perhaps you battle worries about your children or grandchildren. Maybe it’s financial or occupational stress. Perhaps it’s a volatile relationship. Maybe it’s chronic health issues. Perhaps its unanswered spiritual questions with which you are struggling, or it might be concern about the eternal welfare of someone you dearly love. Thanks to the sin that lives in us and all around us, we will always face such challenges in this life. Worry, fear, anxiety, stress will follow us around on this side of heaven.

Jesus’ promise is for you too. “Surely, I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Remember these words. It’s a great passage to display in your home for daily viewing. It’s a comforting hug from your Savior assuring you that no matter your struggle, you are in good hands. You are in His hands. You are in the hands of the all-powerful God who created the universe by simply commanding it into existence. You are in the hands of the one who loved you so much that he left his throne of glory to suffer the gruesome punishment of your sin on the cross. You are in the hands of the one who rose victoriously from the grave and promises, “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19). You are in the hands of the one who has promised, “I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:3). And you are in the hands of the one who “is right and true; faithful in all he does” (Psalm 33:4).

So, take a deep breath and don’t worry. You are in good hands. You are in Jesus’ hands.
