“Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it,
but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.
Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding…”

Deuteronomy 4:2,6

Because He Said So!

I just entered my sixth year of parenting. As my daughter grows up I find myself repeating the same parent phrases I heard from my mom and dad as a child. You know the phrases – the ones every child promises themselves they will never use when they are a parent. Phrases like:

“If you keep making that face, it’ll freeze that way.”
“Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about.”
“Quiet down, I can’t even hear myself think.”
“Let’s play the quiet game.”
“One day you’ll thank me.”
“When I was a kid…”

But the mother of all parent phrases, invincible to any child’s argument, must be: “Because I said so!”  I hated hearing those words as a child. I knew that indisputable declaration negated any chance I had of winning the argument at hand.

I hated those words as a child. But as a parent, I find “Because I said so!” to be a completely logical and acceptable reason for my parental direction. I’m the parent. I know better than my child what is best for them, and a detailed explanation is not required to validate the direction I’ve given. In love, I am always going to make decisions and give directions that will benefit my child. It’s my prayer that God always blesses my decisions to my daughter’s benefit, and that she grows to confidently trust me when I say, “Because I said so!”

God offers many directions for our lives in the Bible. Most of it is not accepted in our culture of loose-living.  Don’t have sex before marriage? Don’t even live together to avoid the perception of sleeping together??? Avoid drunkenness? Be honest? Be kind to those who even mistreat me? Don’t seek revenge? Don’t use foul language or misuse Gods’ name?  Honor authorities even when they are unfair?  Be content with what you have in life? Don’t share the latest gossip? But, why Lord?

Because He said so!  As a parent knows better than their child, so also our heavenly Father knows better than we do. When we are tempted to go along with the norms of this world we often search for a way to circumnavigate God’s directions and rationalize sin. When you find yourself tempted, questioning God’s direction and looking for an out from God’s prescription for godly living, let these words echo in your mind: “Because He said so!” God told the prophet Isaiah, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” We might not always understand God’s direction for godly living, and our sinful nature may not always agree with it, but it is the best recipe for life in this world. Trust Him. God’s way always works out better.

Jesus’ cross is a testament to how much God hates sin, and how much he loves you. The cross proves that God always has your best interests in mind. Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and ascension didn’t benefit him – it benefitted you. Your sin is paid for and heaven is your eternal home. Why? Because He said so.

We rightfully trust our eternal life to our loving Lord and Savior.  Now, trust your daily life to Him too. Live in agreement with his laws simply because He said so.
